We wrapped up a beautiful June week with another blue bird day on the river. Similar to us guides, the fish don’t quite know what to do with this early warm weather. Most fish are staying bunkered due to higher water levels (5.3ft as of this morning) however we’ve seen a couple fish rise both to flies and indicators.
We’ve mostly been testing different nymph rigs and found that Girdle Patterns have been slaying this week pulling consistent native cutthroat! Other flies we’ve had success with are Jig Woollys and Copper Johns, all of which you can find fully stocked at our Fly Shop in the center of town!
This coming week’s forecast predicts cooler weather and lower water levels! Get your layers together because the dropping levels will improve fishing conditions. The bug activity is the variable based on the weather forecast. Stock up on both nymphs and drys. We’ve been seeing a larger salmon fly population compared to last year, along with some small sally’s and huge caddis.
We’re hoping to see fish begin to rise more within the next ten days! In the meantime we have heard rumors of larger Rainbows being stocked in the Yankees Fork ponds. Get out there and enjoy before the July heat pushes people up to Stanley to cool off.
As always, drop by the shop for up-to-date fishing on the Salmon, Middle Fork, creeks and mountain lakes.
Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there. Hope your weekend is filled with fish and family.
